Training
The goal in my program is to send all training horses back home with a solid foundation. All horses that come in for training go through a series of ground work to encourage respect for his or her handler and confidence when it comes to “scary” objects. I do this by teaching them not through force but rather repetition and using a method of sensitizing and desensitizing. When it comes time to start riding them I try to get them soft in their face and sides. As a result, they become extremely responsive and comply naturally to your cues, not radical or intimidated. I teach them to ride on a loose rein and perform the task without much help from the rider. After they have been in training for a while they all usually can go on and learn any discipline and perform according to their natural abilities. Being "broke" is the most important thing a horse can learn before becoming anything else. I like the horses to be happy while in training and they do get worked just about everyday, but they don't know it and that is key to our success!
