Stud Fees for Stallions

What is a Stud Fee?

A Stud Fee is the price charged by a farm or breeder for the right to mate your broodmare to their stallion, in return, the owner of the mare gets to keep the foal or baby. Generally stallions have exceptional breeding and champion bloodlines. Some breeds of horses like Thoroughbreds also require live cover, meaning that the mare has to physically travel to mate with the stallion rather than using artificial insemination with frozen semen. This practice actually limits the number of offspring any single stallion can have.
