Carly is a 11-year-old Cremello QH mare standing at 13.3 hands. You could say she's a Quarter Pony, but she's built wide like a horse, and she definitely doesn't have the pony mane, tail, and attitude. She's very athletic, graceful, and lively. She is one of the sweetest horses I've ever had the pleasure to own. I can call her, and she'll leave her hay hut to come running. Maybe it's in hopes of getting a treat. Maybe it's because she's glad to see me.... (read more) Either way, it's nice to have her so enthusiastic to see me!
I've owned Carly since she was just 2 years old and ready to start under saddle. I've ridden her lightly throughout that time, but to be honest, I don't need a personal horse. I'm too busy training or tuning up horses for our riding programs or preparing a horse for sale. She has too much muscle to put beginners or children on her, so it's just been me riding her all these years. You have to be an experienced rider to appreciate her. Otherwise, she will turn right out from under you. She has an incredible handle on her; she will pivot on the front and hind very naturally. She can literally 'turn on a dime'.
Carly would be an awesome English or Western dressage horse. As you can see from the photos taken candidly out on the trail, she's fancy and proud. She could definitely 'turn and burn' on the barrels or pole bending, but I'm not sure that she would have the speed needed to excel in those events. She is absolutely full of energy, and like an Arabian, she doesn't tire out or calm down. She's has an incredibly smooth jog, and will prance for hours. She always gets the attention of our trail riders because she's so flashy while doing her classy maneuvers going down the trail. And despite her high energy level, she is respectful when being hand-led.
Carly is an easy keeper. She only gets half a scoop of feed twice a day while my regular size saddle horses get two scoops twice a day, and my drafts get three. So if you are an accommplished rider and want to 'ride the airs', Carly can take you there. She has no buck or rear, but she's a Corvette - not a Chevette. Anyone interested in trying her out will have to ride another of my horses while seeing me ride her so that I have the assurance that we both agree that you can meet Carly on her level. I don't want anyone to get hurt (or get their feelings hurt), and I want to be certain that Carly goes to a home where she can be ridden and loved. I recognize that the market for Carly is pretty small since you have to be a very good rider - and small - to ride her. For those reasons, she can be yours for just $5,500, or I'll keep her till she leaves this earth. At least she doesn't eat much, right?! Videos are available on Dead Broke Farm's website.
People always ask why we're selling our horses. There's nothing wrong with them. Quite the contrary. They're for sale because it's part of our business model: we buy, train, put lots of trail hours on them, and make them safe for beginners, and eventually we sell them at a profit to compensate us for all the training and trail hours we have put on them. We don't have to speculate as to what age or riding level a rider needs to be at in order to ride them. We KNOW because they've done it many times over. If we say a 6 year-old child with no riding experience can ride the horse, then they can - and have. And if we say we wouldn't put anyone younger than an inexperienced 10 year-old, then you shouldn't consider the horse for your 5 year-old to ride on their own. All our horses sell as sound with no vices. To see all of our horses for sale, schedule time to come see them at Dead Broke Farm. Prices listed are firm.
