Broke to ride, I’ve only ridden western on him, needs a confident rider that won’t let him walk all over you. He likes to get in your space. He’s definitely more of a trail horse, more stubborn in the arena. Trailers good not the best with getting feet trimmed, he’s definitely had a bad history with that.
He does have navicular.... (read more) He needs front shoes. We were told he had a mild low crushed heel from his previous home from having too small of shoes on and after a few trims he’ll be fine. That was not the case. Once we brought him home in the spring we had our vet come out and do a full exam on him and had X-rays done of his front feet. Our vet confirmed he has navicular in both fronts. He wears eggbar shoes (egg bars kb navicular is what my farrier called them) and he gets a pour in pad for comfort to add more cusion and support. He’s been doing great with these shoes, gets trimmed about every 8 weeks. When riding you can still canter and everything but doing things like barrels where your turning sharp at fast speeds isn’t recommended as it could make him sore in front. Vet recommends he wears sport medicine boots for riding for extra support on the tendon and just because of his navicular. Right side had a little bit thicker tendon so vet thinks he may have had a past injury but is fine now.
I’d say he’s in the middle of pecking order, kept in pasture with a mare and geldings and does great. He’s friendly but like I said before he likes to get in your space, which might not be best for small kids handling him. But kids can probably be ponied on him.
Please ask questions or if you need further clarification on anything. I’m looking to rehome him because I don’t have the time I thought I’d have for him right now with another baby on the way too. And truthfully don’t want a horse needing some maintenance. Was waiting to post him until we had figured out a good ‘routine’ with his feet and got to the bottom of all those issues.
