Toby is an aged (approx 23 yo) grade QH gelding, about 15.2 hands and big bodied. SUPER solid barefoot kinda horse! $500 REHOMING FEE to settle the influx of “omg a free horse who is going straight to slaughter” comments w the possibility of waiving it for the absolute right home for him! The most important thing is the person, care and home being provided. (Would selflessly love to see him boarded here still!! ??) Vet/farrier references and knowledge of where he will be living would be required.... (read more)
*PLEASE READ THE AD, I will not respond to “could I have more information on…” messages. Please ask questions that are NOT in the ad already and I’m happy to answer them.
ANY AND ALL PICS/VIDEOS WILL BE IN HIS ALBUM ON THIS PROFILE PAGE or the Rustic River Farm LLC - Mason Nh page!! If it isn’t there, we do not have them yet.
This decision is NOT being taken lightly and has been one that took a while to finally make so any negative comments or even remotely passive aggressive conversation will IMMEDIATELY be addressed. So let’s do us all a big favor and avoid that. ? So, keyboard warriors w your bleeding hearts, unwanted and UNNECESSARY opinions on things, those that assume the owners don’t care, pipeline/slaughter warriors, etc…put down the fingers, take a deep breath and read the ad…then scroll if you don’t have interest in HOMING this handsome dude or have anything useful and polite to say. Thank you.
Sadly, his owner is getting older…she has massive time constraints in regards to caring for her family (which is tough enough at her age) as well as issues w her own physical limitations at this point. However, through it all, Toby has been a rock for her and will make someone an absolutely STELLAR best friend. While Toby CAN be ridden…it is recommended (due to typical arthritis in both hocks - I would imagine injections may help this to make him MORE of a riding horse) he is used mainly as a companion, lead line “pony” or a LIGHT riding horse. (I will NOT promise he will ever be more but if you’re willing to put some time and money in, it is POSSIBLE he could do a bit more. But he WILL NOT be your jumper, Gymkhana, gallop down the trails kinda horse) He has always excelled out on the trails and absolutely loves to take a stroll through the dirt roads, woods and rail trails. He will go out solo , lead or follow, crosses bridges, stops to check out water crossings before carefully managing his way through, doesn’t bat an eye or ear at deer/other animals/ATVs/light traffic. This guy is the SAME horse no matter how long it’s been since you’ve gotten on his back. Toby is responsive to seat, leg and hand so not for those that ride w a vice grip. I trust him to be led around, tied, groomed/bathed, climbed all over and ridden by my just turned 8 year old daughter. However, I will NOT be saying this horse is “child safe, beginner safe, etc” simply due to how responsive he is under saddle and how everyone takes those terms way too far. My child is NOT your child!! Please remember this! Toby, however, can 100000% be trusted on the ground or being led around w just about anyone. “Beginner safe” is a very touchy and entirely personalized kind of term and while Toby has been described this way here w me…this is NOT how I am marketing him due to those that truly do not understand how circumstantial those terms are. This horse is gonna make someone an amazing companion to their other horses , the absolute loveliest LIGHT RIDING partner or even someone’s very handsome husband’s horse who wants to have a dark beer or two and hang out after a day of work! Toby is UTD on absolutely everything and has had a loving, caring and exceptional owner for many years now…and nothing less will be considered for him. Absolutely phenomenal for vet/farrier, easy to hose, cross/straight ties and will load up and haul! Super easy keeper as well. The only “downside” to his upkeep (which really shouldn’t be a downside if you plan on having horses for extended periods of time) is that we do soak his alfalfa pellets since they’re bigger and does wind up quidding some hay up here and there. NO HE HAS NEVER CHOKED! We do this simply out of respect to his age and the way he prefers to eat his food…he isn’t the only horse on property we do this for either. I’m extremely detailed w how my horses are fed here. His grain itself, a Senior feed, is never soaked. They all eat hay pellets in the AM and I just throw them w his alfalfa to soak to make my life easier. He’s been an incredibly easy keeper, even after soaking his pellets, quidding some hay and such. On Vit E (everyone on farm is) and Cosequin since he IS a distinguished, older gentleman! He grows a nice, thick, polar bear coat in the winter and sheds out well come spring. He WILL stall at night behind just a couple stall chains but man…he LOVES to be outside in a run in so he can “watch over ‘his’ property and herd of horses”. Does well w all others but does typically wind up the top of the pecking order. However, he doesn’t run anyone around, no bite marks, etc. Toby has also slept over and been the ONLY HORSE on property w his owner. He did great and didn’t seem to mind one bit so long as he got the his morning and evening “hello” w a pat and food, some attention throughout the day! Respects electric/board fencing as well. I’ll really miss this guy being around as he’s been boarded w me for years, even through our moving to a new location. But…he deserves a person that can be here daily and that’s what his owner can no longer provide. So, she is SELFLESSLY putting her own emotions aside to find him a better, more active and engaging life style! At least the “active and engaging” being tons of TLC, maybe a buddy or two and possibly some LIGHT riding! Because of my appreciation and knowledge of this guy…I would be MORE than happy to keep space open for him should the new owner want or need it!!
