If you want colour, safety, and a been-there-done-that partner, Chance is your guy! Located in Kamloops, British Columbia, Chance is a 17 year old 15.2hh palomino Saddlebred gelding (registered but papers were misplaced by previous owner). If you don’t know much about Saddlebreds or have heard that they’re hot, you will be pleasantly surprised by how quiet Chance is.... (read more) He is not your high-stepping, firey type of Saddlebred, more like a light horse with a slightly higher head and tail set that makes him look showy. He is three gaited, not five gaited, so normal walk, trot, canter. Loves to be groomed, fussed over, and told how handsome he is.
Chance has been ridden western, english, and bareback, in a bit or in a hackamore. Mr. Versatile! He has a forward walk, a steady, springy trot (doesn't rush), and the most fun rocking horse canter that will make you giggle! He prefers his left canter lead, but it could also just be a lack of strength going to the right.
He’s super light to your leg and rein aids, and is more woah than go (will never change gaits without being asked and sometimes needs an extra squeeze and kiss to keep going). Good with traffic, machinery, dogs, and wildlife. He has tons of miles on the trails in the mountains and will go through or over almost anything. Surefooted going up and down hills, over uneven terrain, and through the woods. He’s used to riding in groups and out alone (although he's a little more alert alone and can be impatient about standing still).
Not generally spooky and no buck, rear, or bolt. He doesn’t need to be lunged, but if you want to, he’s very steady and stops perfectly when you say “woah”. When you’re on him, I discovered that if you lean off to the side, he’ll stop because he thinks you’re falling off! (I was just adjusting my stirrup) Now that is a good horse.
Chance has a puppy dog personality and loves following you around to see what you’re up to. He often nickers when you’re bringing him food, and has the most endearing, kind eyes that result in you emptying your pockets of allll your treats!
Both adults and kids have ridden him. A confident beginner with guidance would do really well with him but a more experienced rider would also love this uncomplicated ride. He has a slender build, so his rider and tack shouldn’t weigh more than about 200lb. Please note I am six feet tall, so my legs hang down on him more than other horses.
He is up to date on trims, deworming, and vaccinations. He has mild hock arthritis (common among older teen horses) that would come up on flexions, but doesn't affect him day-to-day -- he is still very limber and willing to ride with no maintenance, although it may be a good idea if he's being used more regularly. He has had shoes in the past for mountain riding, but is currently barefoot with good feet. He has been kept n both paddocks and turned out on pasture with mares and geldings.
