Brought to Iceland by Norse settlers in the 9th and 10th centuries, these horses have remained a pure breed for over a thousand years. No outside horses are allowed to be imported to Iceland, horses are only allowed to be exported out. Once the Iceland horses have left, they can’t return. This prevents from cross breeding and protects the purest breed. Icelandic horses are a national treasure, and their well being and preservation are extremely important!
The breed is long-lived, sturdy, and hardy, due to the rough living conditions of their home country. 40 years and up to 59 years is the average life span. In Iceland they are still used for traditional sheepherding work, leisure riding, and showing. They are known worldwide for their genuine, welcoming, and friendly character, making them the perfect life long partner!
Three fun facts about the Icelandics!
1️⃣Icelandics are the only horse in the world that have 5 gaits, instead of 2. Of course walk, trot, lope, but they can also do the tolt and the flying pace.
2️⃣They are known for having the most colorful breed, 40 colors and over 100 different color variations.
3️⃣Out of the 60 million horses in the world, approximately 300,000 are Icelandic, and only about 6,647 Icelandic horses are in US.

Hershey is adventurous and ready for new trails every day! From the pasture, to the hills, to town he’s an easy going ride. Unbothered by busy traffic, tarps, and waving the flag all around him.
