Gypsy is a stunning 9-year-old Mustang mare. She is an eyecatcher wherever she goes with her golden palomino coat (picture is winter color, she turns golden around April) and long, thick mane and tail. She stands 15hh and has a stout build to her.
She has been ridden extensively all over the ranch, gathering and sorting cattle, and is sure-footed in even the rockiest of terrains. She can go all day long with no quit, she'll give you her all.... (read more) She rides alone and also does great with other horses and is a great trail-riding horse. I've used her regularly to pony my three youngsters around so they can get used to going on rides and she is fantastic and level-headed throughout. She will cross water, isn't spooky, and maintains a nice pace. She's also great turned out in a herd with other horses.
Her previous owner team roped on her as a head horse, and she did great. They won a number of buckles in Jackpots all over the valley, and she put him in the money several times. I'm not a roper myself, and haven't team-roped off her, but I do have videos of her runs with her previous owner. He told me she does great in the box and positions herself well on a cow to where it was really easy for him to learn how to team rope and also do really well, quickly. I bought Gypsy primarily to use around the ranch, trail ride and for my husband to rope off of (but he doesn't really have the time with his job like he was hoping and I have 3 youngsters to work with). She'd be great for someone wanting to get started in roping or someone who wants to go to jackpots to rope and have a great time.
I have also worked with Gypsy in the arena a bunch, to work on softness all around. She picks up both leads, backs up, has started giving me a flying lead change, and has a very smooth trot and lope. She direct reins and stays really soft with that, but also neck reins well. Currently working on sidepassing and flying lead changes, which she's getting better at by the day. Gypsy loads up in the trailer, picks up all four feet and is currently only shod in the front (her back feet are super solid and stay that way even with long days in rocky country).
Gypsy has had beginners on her and does great, however if a beginner is going to ride her I would suggest that it's done with a knowledgeable person present, at least for the first while as you're getting to know each other. A beginner can ride her out on the trail just fine, however if you're doing more technical stuff like arena riding it would be best for a beginner to do lessons or have access to a more knowledgeable rider/person if they have questions or need assistance in maintaining that softness. The reason for this is that she was riding around high-headed and not collected in her body when I first got her. She is doing great with that now and almost drags her nose over the ground and collects up nicely, but I can see how a beginner could undo that or create bad habits without proper instruction and/or guidance. I have videos available of how she rides around in both the arena and outside on the ranch. Feel free to email or call me for more information and pictures/videos, come try her out!
