Senior gentleman looking for a family to call his own. Gilbert was rescued last year from an abusive home where he endured years of starvation, neglect, and rough handling. We've rehabbed him almost a year and he has blossomed into a trusting, affectionate guy. Estimated to be in his early 20s and would be best suited for a leisurely trail home. He's done some lessons, but we feel he'd be happiest with 1 or 2 people of his very own.... (read more) He's sweet as can be and wants to please.
Not the most confident in the arena, so he appreciates encouragement, guidance, and a calm demeanor from his rider. His default when he's nervous is to stop. On the trail, he seems more in his element; hasn't been bothered by dogs, forest noises, or traffic.
Gilbert is getting creaky in the hind end, so a walk/trot life will be most comfortable to him. He gets worried about canter so we haven't pushed him to do it. He doesn't have perfect confirmation, his back is swayed, but if your expectations match his abilities, you'll have a great partner.
He is barefoot and has not been a high maintenance guy. Easy keeper, though we do recommend joint supplements especially in winter. Has lived primarily out so does not require a fussy stalled life. We've found he does better living with other geldings. He likes mares very much, but will appoint himself protector and then develop separation anxiety (he was trauma bonded to a mare when he came to us). With the bachelors, he's cool as a cucumber.
Price negotiable to a great home. This old man has earned a soft landing and we know he has lots more love to give. Located in Williamsburg, VA.
