Mecate is a stunning 10-year-old dark bay gelding, with a beautiful long, black mane and tail. Standing at 15hh, he's very well put together conformationally.
Mecate has participated in all kinds of events and disciplines. He has been trail ridden extensively, in the desert, in the mountains, in rocky country. He's surefooted and maintains a nice, steady, forward pace. He is not spooky. He will ride out alone or in a group.... (read more) Almost every Wednesday for three years, he was shown doing barrel racing, where he showed guests at a ranch rodeo what barrel racing looked like, and competed against competitive 2D horses. He's been used for cattle sorting, team penning, has done polo, and would absolutely excel at gymkhana/speed events. He has also been shot off of. This guy will run his heart out if you ask him to, with pleasure. Consequently, he requires a rider with some experience.
He is also incredibly bold on obstacles. He will cross water boxes, river crossings, bridges, tarps, poles, will drag and rope the roping dummy, and go over jumps without any hesitation. Mecate really wants to please and figure out how he can best help you with whatever you're doing. We've roped the dummy off him a bunch and pushed cows off him. I would not be surprised if he's been roped off of a bunch, I just haven't had the chance to try a live steer. This horse will go all day long, and is a real sweetheart.
He has four strong feet, we've had him either barefoot or shod in just the front. His back feet are in outstanding shape, and he's not needed hind shoes even in the rocky country we are in.
He has some cloudiness in his right eye from an old injury. It has healed and has been checked by a vet, and it doesn't seem to affect his vision in that eye whatsoever. The vet stated that looking at it, it was most likely a branch that hit his eye which caused a small scar on the corneal layer which has left some cloudiness.
Mecate would be an outstanding partner for a variety of riders. He'd be an outstanding back country horse, that can go all day and handles all different types of terrain really well; he'd make an amazingly competitive barrel racer, gymkhana, team penning/sorting horse, you name it. With some training, he'd make a good roping horse as well.
