Shadow is one of the sweetest, brightest mares you'll ever find. She is affectionate and friendly, even with her newborn at her side. She is also exceptionally calm and trusting. She teaches her babies how to enjoy human company.
She has a good amount of step to her and a square, 4 beat gait that she passes to her foals. She stands 15.2h barefoot on concrete with great bone and substance. She tends to throw foals MUCH taller than she is.... (read more) Her foals usually mature over 16h.
She is homozygous tobiano and black, so she will always throw black-based spotted foals. When bred to a stallion homozygous for cream and agouti, she will produce 100% buckskin tobiano foals. She tends to throw darker shades of buckskin as well.
We decided to put Shadow under saddle when she was 12 years old. With just 30 days of riding, she acted like a professional. Brave, confident and willing. She hasn't had much saddle time, but we wanted to evaluate her trainability and she exceeded our expectations. Since we had other, more pressing projects, we put Shadow on the back burner and focused on the horses who needed attention since Shadow has never had any problem earning her keep. Her foals have always been top sellers for us and usually sell within days of birth (be sure to check out her production record below!) Four years later, I decided to pull her out of the field, tack her up and hop on. Once again, Shadow was AMAZING. She didn't care for the bit (just kind of chewed it uncomfortably, so I took it off and just rode her in the halter), but never once took a single step out of line. She walked when I said walk, turned, stopped and acted like we hadn't missed a day riding. I asked Jarred to climb on to take a video and the results are below. He even asked her to canter, which was new to her under saddle and she just went right along with it. Like the true boss mare this girl is. You have to love Shadow. NOTHING gets to her.
She is in foal to The Tennessee Stud for a bay tobiano or buckskin tobiano 2024 foal.
