Rio is very quiet and gentle. He is easy to handle, easy to be around and loves attention. He stands around 15 hands. Rio is very well broke, neck reins, responds to leg pressure, etc. He'll go anywhere, has been ridden in the South Dakota hills, in parades, etc. His last owner was a very inexperienced rider. In fact, when we got Rio, he had about the worse farrier job we've ever seen. OUR farrier was not happy at all. SUPER long toes with shoes that had been tacked on without any concern for trimming him.... (read more) Needless to say, Rio was a little 'off' from lack of care/caring. He's MUCH better at this point, but he's going to need a few more months of being barefoot (with regular trims) before we know if he'll ever be 100% sound again. He gets along great on the trails we've taken him on recently, but you can tell he's still a little stiff when turning him. We've found that a little bute the day before riding eliminates that stiffness.
Update 5/26/2023: I doubt he's ever going to be 100% sound, but he IS serviceably sound for light riding, or heavier riding with maintenance (bute).
Rio would be a great horse for any beginning rider and/or anyone wanting a quiet gentle horse for a few easy going trail rides and/or a step up trail horse for a younger rider. He's also be a GREAT horse for an older rider wanting to get back into horses without having to worry about what the horse will be like if you only ride upon occasion.

The pastures not being used for grazing are open for trail riding by our boarders. We have several paddocks (100 x 200) with run in sheds, as well as the standard stall boarding in the barn. Access to the 60 x 152 indoor riding arena is included in monthly board fees.
