What Are Brown and White Horses Called?
Brown and white horses typically aren’t called that by people who breed them. Horses can have a variety of base coat colors that look brown or reddish brown in color. This includes bay, sorrel and chestnut horses.
To get brown and white, the horse not only needs to have one of these base coats, but also needs to have the Tobiano or Overo gene which covers the base coat with patches of white. Therefore horses that are brown and white are typically called Bay Overo, Bay Tobiano, Chestnut Overo or Chestnut Tobiano depending on the combination of genes that make up their coloring. There’s also a unique pattern called Medicine Hat that is brown and white as well.
