What Does Broke Horse Mean?
Horses go through different levels of training before being ridden by people. Horses that have no training at all and are just starting out are called green horses. As they progress through their training, they "break" through different levels. At first, horses are trained to accept a halter on their head and a lead rope, at which point they are called halter broke. Once they are comfortable with a saddle on their backs, they are considered saddle broke. Finally, once a horse learns to accept a rider without complaining they are considered broken. Horses that are very comfortable with riders on their backs are said to be well broken.
